Summer Art & Drawing Camps!

This summer I will be offering the popular Art & Drawing Camps again! These popular classes have a low student ratio, so that I can focus on each child and their strengths, individually. This is a great opportunity for children 7 to 16 to work on their artistic skills with like minded peers.

Registration is now open for this popular summer camp. Head over to my classes section to see all of the options I have on offer. These classes will be held outside in my back garden (weather permitting).

I like to keep the class size small to nuture each child's love of drawing and art. I encourage them to discover new techniques and skills to further their knowledge of their own abilities, gently nudging them to explore all that art has to offer.

There are a few payment options including by credit, or e-transfer. Also, please let me know if you have any questions by shooting me an email at: annette@annette.co

Please forward this information on to anyone that might be interested. Thanks so much!

Dance the Night Away

This painting is based on a sketch of a photo that I took with my iPhone4. We had gone to dinner at East is East, a Vancouver restaurant with amazing food from the silk road, with friends. We had great food and during dinner we also enjoyed great music and flamenco dancers. This restaurant provides live music and dance, often Jazz or a mix of diverse cultural musicians and tonight we had Flamenco.

The performances that evening were so inspiring. I took what seemed like a million pictures, all blurry, because it was dark and they were moving fast [and, you know, my old phone]. I've finally gotten around to sketching out ideas using these "great shots" as reference. What I noticed first is how illustrative and exact each movement by the dancer was. Their arms, legs, hips, faces all moving to and stopping in exact positions. I used several photos as reference for the clothes and how they moved, when the bodies stopped. After, some trial and error, I came up with this sketch of a dancer with her arms up, her toes pointed and her skirt moving.

I've been trying a lot of new things lately and one of them is working in new mediums (papers, colours, styles). For this painting I used a new to me paper called Yupo paper, which is 100% Polypropylene. Sooo, plastic? I've tried using this paper before, maybe it was a different brand, but I wasn't happy with the results. It was quite resistant to the paint and the drying time was a few days, which is unheard of for watercolour. I was still determined that I wanted to use Yupo paper, so I tried a different brand. I'm glad I did because it was a much better experience this time. I love how white it is, like a clean slate. Any colour on this paper would just pop off of the page. Also, because I often work with very fine tipped pens that wear out quite easily on other papers, this one saves me a lot of pens.

It is still very difficult to control where the paint goes and how it looks when it dries, but it turned out much better than I anticipated. I'm definitely going to use this paper again. Next up are coloured inks! I'll keep you posted on how that turns out.

A new year, a quick video

I've been busy as a bee creatively these past few weeks. Every spare minute I've been working on sketches, colour palettes, different styles and textures. I'm taking a page out of Pablo Picasso's book and creating, creating, creating. I have bunch of new art ready to go and there will be more coming this year. I've put up a few pieces in my Society6 shop this week, which by the way is having a sale. It ends on Sunday so if you've wanted one of my prints, now is the time to get it.
I'm posting a video or "art in progress", so that you can get an idea of what I do. Look how fast my hand is flying over the paper, it's like magic!

Updated Art Class Schedule

I've added some interesting classes for the new year, for beginners to advanced. After many requests, I've added a class for little ones (ages 5–7) and a class on finding your own illustration style.

Check out the classes page for the new schedule in 2017.

New year, new website

I've updated my website to include an area for my artwork! Stay tuned for more artwork to come (as I find time to document them). There's also a link to my Society6 store, where you can buy prints and cool merchandise with my art and design patterns.

Here's a peek at some of the stuff you can buy:
